Indian Madder

मञ्जिष्ठा (Mañjiṣṭhā)

Rubia cordifolia

Manjishtha is hailed in Ayurveda as a potent detoxifier that quickly removes accumulated ama or toxins in the body. According to Ayurveda, all illness and disease begins with an accumulation of ama. Manjistha clears congestion in the lymphatic system and removes impurities in blood, eliminating excess Kapha and Pitta.

Manjistha is a tall climber plant that is covered with heart-shaped green leaves. However, it is its red roots that are used in both Ayurvedic oral preparations and to extract color for dyeing.

It is an ideal herb for pacifying fiery Pitta imbalances that often manifest as inflammation of the skin, rashes, fevers and even outbursts of anger. Manjistha dyed fabrics and textiles are extremely useful in supporting skin health and ideal for use during hot summer months when Pitta becomes aggravated.

Adults and children with skin sensitivities will find manjistha dyed cotton fabrics, handwoven towels, and clothing exceptionally comfortable and cooling. Manjistha also counteracts lethargy, sluggishness. brain fog, and poor digestion - all symptoms of a Kapha imbalance.

With shades that range from a rusty red to a pink-tinged terracotta, manjistha dyed textiles can be used in a range of lifestyle products. Using manjistha-dyed textiles against the skin allows for this powerful detoxifying herb to be gently absorbed through the pores and aid in soothing inflammation, provide a cooling relief to excess Pitta and help clear Kapha blockages.
